Terraces are often visible on many of the volcanic cones that were Māori pa sites. Rangitoto Island is the youngest volcano with its last eruption just 550 years ago.
The volcanic field is not extinct and a new volcano is likely, however gaps between volcanic eruptions can be hundreds or thousands of years.
